As a former Roman monastery, the Abbaye de Sainte Croix is composed of very pure architectural forms with vaults and archways forming a maze of small corridors, nooks and crannies, embellished here and there by stairways – often with very uneven steps – and narrow openings onto the outdoors. The rooms, incorporated into the former living quarters of the Byzantine monks, are mostly small and intimate.
